We know Durga Puja as a 10 day carnival to welcome Maa Durga and celebrate her valor. Here is a new perspective towards Durga Puja. It is a confluence of age long memories and modern artistry take on society. Now, aint that radical?
Be it the shiuli and kaash flowers or the fragrances of autumn, the booming sound of the dhaak, or the ulus sung by the women in laalpar sarees, there are so many things about Pujo that we can identify with. Walking into any puja pandal, decor elements like the red or maroon or multicolored cloth enclosure, the chal chitra behind the idols, the grand aatop chaal alpona , the ornate chandmalas made of shola, the sinthi mukut, the kadam phool called jhanpa or other sholapith craft, all these would take any puja veteran down the memory lane. On the other hand, the pandal decorations have year on year evolved to embrace socio-political and environmental themes too. The objective being to spread awareness through the masses while connecting it with faith and belief. The Puja pandals and lightings also showcase this marvelous folk art of Bengal by highlighting the various events of the contemporary world we live within today.
Durga Puja is exactly like the idols that we worship during this extravaganza. It stands on the kathamo or the primary bamboo structure signifying our traditions and memories, while the aesthetics on the outside beautifully adapts to the modern age, place, and people. This is the reason, that irrespective of where they are, probashi Bengalis and pujo lovers never fail to express their love for Pujo through their pandals.
